Today the first class of students in the new Chicago Chamberlain BSN program start orientation. It is primarily to work with these students that I have been given this great opportunity here at DeVry.
I have tremendous respect for nurses. During my career as a physician, nurses have been a constant source of inspiration and support, often saving my butt as well as patients' lives despite my "expertise." Nurses are the real caregivers in medicine.
Here's to you, ladies and gents!
Dear Dr. Smith,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words and appreciation for the PROFESSION of nursing. Our class read your post this morning and thought that although you seem to appreciate our work, that there is still a long way to go: as we are not only good for (your words) "saving physicians' butts" despite your 'expertise.' We are actually very scientifically educated and are capable of treating and caring for very complex conditions that patients have, while still able to see the whole patient. We are often undermined and overlooked, and we do take responsibility for that--however, please do not perpertuate this myth. Thank you for your time and energy reading this post and please consider the work of nurses to be more than holding patients' hands. Signed, A Class of Graduating Senior Nursing Students (soon to be your colleagues)
